I thought the earth remembered me,
She took me back so tenderly
Arranging her dark skirts, her pockets
Full of lichens and seeds.
I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed,
nothing between me and the white fire of the stars
but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths
among the branches of the perfect trees.

At night I heard the small kingdoms
breathing around me, the insects,
and the birds who do their work in the darkness.
All night I rose and fell, as if in water,
Grappling with the luminous doom. By morning
I had vanished at least a dozen times
into something better.

Pegi was Executive Director of Project Canoe from 2000 – 2008. During those eight years, Pegi’s leadership and fundraising enabled hundreds of young people to make extended summer canoe trips into the Ontario’s Temagami wilderness. “Nature doesn’t judge you” is how many young people feel about the natural world.  Access to programs in outdoor spaces such as Temagami and Algonquin Provincial Park not only supports youth mental health and wellbeing, but helps them connect to something bigger and better. Your donation will help support Project Canoe’s summer canoe trip programs for youth.
